DISLOCATIONS AND SPRAINS

Articulated joints keep their stability thanks to the muscles, tendons and ligaments. If the articular joints, usually because of a sudden trauma, lose their correlation, or exceed the limits of their extension, the joint will undergo DISLOCATION if the loss is permanent in time or a SPRAIN, if the loss is momentary (it could be for tenths of a second, but enough to cause damage).

WHAT TO DO?

In both cases:

  1. apply ice to ease the pain and swelling.
  2. immobilise the affected joint.
  3. go to the Casualty Department, one specialised in orthopaedics and traumatology would be best.

Twisted ankles (tibio-tarsal) are one of the most frequent sprains, they can be quickly treated with a stiff bandaging, but not too tight, which can be applied from the foot, starting just under the toes and finishing just under the knee.
