STROKES
Given the similarities between the two mechanisms I have dealt with strokes in the section that covers heart attacks. In this section I will explain the principal symptoms and unfortunately the little first aid assistance that can be given.
The main symptoms of a stroke (proportional to the quantity of damaged tissue) are.
- headache
- loss of consciousness
- aphasia (= loss of speech) or dysarthria (= difficulty in articulating words)
- loss of voluntary control of the muscles (paralysis or plegia)
- asymmetry of the lip line with loss of expression to half of the face
- breathing difficulties
- nausea and /or sudden vomiting
- anisocoria (different pupil diameters, see below)

WHAT TO DO?
- Call for an ambulance.
- place the victim on his side (in the recovery position) to prevent him from swallowing vomit.
- check the sufferer’s vital functions that could be critical.
- pay special attention to the air ways, that could be obstructed with the tongue or vomit, which must be immediately cleared.
